# Billing

> What uses a shortlist from your plan, and what is free.

The API is billed in **shortlists**, the same unit as the app. Your plan grants a number of shortlists; each new
search uses one.

A search that fails to start gives its shortlist back. A retried launch with the same `Idempotency-Key` never
uses a second one.

When the plan has no shortlists left, a launch returns `402 shortlist_allocation_exhausted`. Add shortlists under
**Settings → Plan & billing**. Without an active plan, every API request returns `402 plan_required`.
